No such thing as a life that’s better than yours
(Love yourz)
No such thing as a life that’s better than yours
No such thing, no such thing
J. Cole Love Yourz
One of my favorite songs, recently, has been J. Cole’s Love Yourz. This song relates to feelings that we can all relate to, feelings of envy and jealousy. We often look at the lifestyles of those around us, see what they have, and compare ourselves to them. We feel that if we don’t live a particular lifestyle or drive a fancy car, we are not living a purposeful life. We fall into the trap of focusing on others’ blessings and ignoring our own. From personal experience, I have done this. I have looked at the blessing of others and wondered why my blessings were not the same.
Before I continue, I just wanted to clarify a misconception. Some people get envy confused with jealousy. To me, jealousy has harmful and dangerous connotations. To be jealous means that you have irrational hate or anger towards a person because they have something that you would want. Someone who is jealous cannot stand to see a person in a better position than they are; they are simply haters. With me, I am not a hater; in fact, it is ultimately the opposite. I am incredibly proud and happy for them. In fact, you may even think that it is me that it happened to. I genuinely enjoy seeing people do and get amazing things. I use them as motivation and inspiration. However, it does bother me sometimes when I feel that I am going above and beyond and doing precisely what I am supposed to be doing. However, these amazing things are not happening, and I cannot see them happening in the future. It seems that I am just existing and not truly living.
Someone I look up to helped me realize that it’s ok to not be in the same place as others. She gave me 5 pieces of wisdom that helped me get over my envy. The first piece of wisdom she gave explained to me that I am still very young. Some of these individuals I envy are older and have more life experience than me. I should not compare where they are to where I am because we are at different life stages, and I have plenty of time to do all those things. The second piece of wisdom I received was that if I envy others’ blessings, I may miss my own. I hear this all the time. However, it hit me that she is right. If I continuously think about what others are blessed with, I will not have time to receive my blessing. Third, she informed me that I am blessed and others may envy my blessings. I realized that I live a very comfortable life and have many opportunities at my fingertips that others do not have. I should remember that others would probably kill to be in the position that I am in right now.
I love my life simply because I love the person I am and the person I am becoming. As I get older, I have no regret or second thought about my life.
Until Next Time:
Let God’s light shine within you and through you!
